       Sticks and Stones

No doubt the trees are alive
They have their lives, as we have ours
They have their time, as we have ours
Its just a matter of scale
They have their loves
             how can we doubt that
All life is ruled by love
       And take the rocks
       Do they have love
As they lie there together over the millennia
       Through the infinitude of time
             Merging
             Co-mingling themselves
       Into other rocks
             In other times
       Transisting from granites
             To  sedimentary sands
       From magma
             to gritty spongelike stone
       How can we doubt it
             Rocks like trees have love
So if we see these lives
             See their loves
Can we also hear their songs
             The forest songs
             The mountain's songs
The futile love song of a lonely hawthorn
       Struggling on a bleak hillside
The beach sands
       And limestone sea cliffs
             call to each other
       Soul mates in time
       Unimaginable in our
             human scale
       Imaginable only because
             we believe in love
       Our most lasting fateful need
